Do you remember getting a gold star on your copybook when you did a good job on your school project or homework? 

Or, did you get a free coffee this morning for collecting six free stamps on your coffee loyalty card? Or, did you predict the score correctly from last night’s match or get a free level up for finishing a streak on your Headspace mindfulness app? Or did you unlock genius discounts on booking.com 

 

Well, if you did that’s gamification in action. 

 

Gamification is weaved into all types of products and marketing campaigns essentially to make the experience more fun or rewarding and keep us engaged ( aka spending more money!).

 

The business case for gamification is very simple: if you tap into the behavioural drivers for gamification and make the experience more game like or fun then consumers are more likely to adopt the service or make a purchase. 

 

Simple product features like progress bars, button sounds or product quizzes can have a huge effect in nudging consumers towards the finish line or checkout. 

 

Gamification leverages game psychology and taps into our human need for discovery, mastery, achievement, loss aversion, the need for personal and social recognition and our natural curiosity and appetite for fun.
